Second Chance Animal Aid- Mission Statement

SCAA is a private, non-profit organization committed to protecting and improving the health and welfare of companion animals through education, health care, advocacy, outreach, adoption and the promotion of foster care as an alternative approach to traditional shelters.  We believe it is the right of every companion animal to have a safe, healthy life in a loving home.

SCAA’s mission is to raise funding to support local animal welfare projects and organizations that seek to upgrade their facilities and services to Western standards, but which may not independently have the financial resources or training to provide adequate care for domestic animals in need.  SCAA assesses and approves animal welfare projects on a case-by-case basis and provides financial, Western-standard medical care and product support only to those projects that provide transparent business and accounting practices and above all, a true love for the animals in their care.

SCAA is also dedicated to domestic animal population control, promoting pet adoption/fostering and reducing the incidence of abandonment.  Fostering animals into loving and nurturing homes provides an efficient and less expensive alternative to traditional animal shelters and provides options to respond to emergency situations (such as the mass abandonment of pets during the SARS outbreak). Furthermore, SCAA recognizes the critical need to enhance public awareness and understanding (through the creation of school programs, informational pamphlets, phone support and a bilingual web site) of such issues as general pet care training, spaying/neutering, disease prevention and animal behavior that will strengthen the human-animal bond.

SCAA was founded by Carol A. Wolfson in 2005. Ms. Wolfson is an international business consultant who has been involved with children’s and animal charities in Asia throughout the 25 years she has worked in the region.  She was on the fundraising board of WWF in HK and helped create/edit their members’ magazine from 1991-2001.  She has served on the Worldwide Board of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) 2002-2005 and currently raises funds for IFAW’s projects in China.  Like all animal lovers in Shanghai, she is extremely concerned about the plight of homeless and mistreated companion animals and believes that through SCAA’s support of worthy existing local projects/organizations and the education of the public and young people, both the expatriate and local community can save many more of Shanghai’s domestic animals from lives of abandonment, suffering and death.  But WE NEED YOUR HELP!
