Third Party Adoptions

What is a Third Party Adoption?
This is where someone finds an animal that is not currently in SCAA foster care but would like to find an adoptive home using SCAA as a source.

SCAA’s priority is to adopt out those animals under our volunteers’ foster care. A great deal of time, money, effort and love is spent bringing our rescued animals to optimal health in the isolation of our foster parents’ individual care, usually taking several weeks to several months. Once an animal is deemed sufficiently healthy, our foster parents devote their time to bringing their wards to SCAA Adoption Days twice each month; this takes several hours of their weekends each Adoption Day. Please remember that everyone in SCAA is a volunteer, often very busy with a full-time career or family to take care of, and that we do NOT have a shelter in which to house any animals. For every animal passed to SCAA, we have to find foster parents to take that animal in. We have our hands full, and are usually overwhelmed, with the number of the animals we ourselves save within SCAA, and our dedicated foster parents are over-burdened taking in animal after animal after animal.

SCAA would love to be able to help all animals in need; however, Third Party Adoptions cause the animals we have been caring for to lose an opportunity for adoption. Most people who have suddenly found an abandoned animal and wish us to help with adopting it out have spent very little time taking care of the animal in comparison to our SCAA foster parents. SCAA covers all medical costs for our fostered animals, which at a minimum for a healthy animal is RMB 500. Costs can increase to several thousand RMB if an animal is sick. Our foster parents use their own funds to provide food, litter, leashes, toys, etc.

SCAA appears to be an easy solution to sudden emergencies, but unless more people come forward to become foster parents our hands are tied, which is why our policy is: If you find an abandoned animal, it is YOUR responsibility. If you are willing to take responsibility for an abandoned animal you find, SCAA will help you get discounted medical care at PAW vet clinic, put the animal up on our website, and attempt to find a foster parent if available. If there are no foster parents available, you must keep the animal until it is adopted out. (If you are NOT willing to take responsibility for an animal you find, please do not call us as we will not take physical possession of animals without your cooperation.)

If you are willing to pay for the medical care of the animal you take in, plus provide foster care for as long as necessary, we will also help you adopt out the animal at our Adoption Days. As a Third Party Adoption, we require an initial donation of RMB 200 (RMB 100 to become an SCAA supporter and RMB 100 to put your animal at our Adoption Day). If you are already an SCAA foster parent, there is no charge to bring an additional animal you are taking care of to Adoption Day. If you are an SCAA member but are not a foster parent, there is still a RMB 100 charge to bring an animal to the Adoption Day. Plus there is a fee of RMB 100 each time you bring the animal to our Adoption Days.

As a Third Party Adoption, whenever we are successful at adopting out your companion rescued animal, we require another minimum donation of RMB 500 (if you are already an SCAA foster parent, there is no additional donation required). SCAA believes we are providing a very convenient service for Third Parties.

Further, all Third Party animals must be healthy and spayed/neutered (or RMB 500 provided for spay/neutering). Third Party attendance at our Adoption Day must be approved in advance.

Finally, if you do bring an animal to our Adoption Day and it is not adopted, you are required to take it home with you (you may not leave the animal with SCAA representatives unless pre-approved by the SCAA founder or director).

Third Party Adoptions Involving Expats Moving out of Shanghai

Third Party Adoption fees only apply to rescued animals. Help with relocating your pet would be viewed as a special case which we would consider based upon a very generous donation since we are NOT a re-homing service. See I cannot keep my pet
